Stage 3: Dunnet Beach to Scrabster

Distance: 9.63 miles | 15.56 kilometers

Please note: This is currently broken down into two stages as there are some obstacles to overcome before this stage can safely be promoted, eventually stage three will be able to be walked in its entirety.

Stage 3a: Dunnet Beach to Battery Road

Distance: 3.69 Miles/ 5.99km
Making up the first half of the third stage of the trail, this is a nice easy going beach walk initially, following 2 miles of golden sands along Dunnet Beach where you can admire the views out over to Scrabster and along the coastline of Murkle. The trail also takes in the Harbour, Heritage Centre and Flagstone Trail, which is a great view point for Dunnet Head. Parts of this section are Waymarked.

Eventually we hope to join up section 3a and 3b, which will allow stage three to be walked in its entirety from Dunnet Beach to Scrabster, but there are some obstacles for us to overcome between Castlehill and Murkle before this is easily walked or promoted. If you do wish to connect 3a and b via the coastline, I would recommend doing so at low tide to allow easier access along the shoreline to Murkle Bay, rather than turning left up Battery Road, turn right down onto the shore. However, please be aware that to the East of Murkle Bay there is some scrambling required over rocks so care must be taken.

Stage 3b – Clarendon Haven to Scrabster

Distance: 5.94 Miles/ 9.57km
The second half of the third stage of the North Coast Trail takes us from Clardon Haven along the headland overlooking spectacular cliffs, past Thurso Castle onto Thurso, where the route follows Victoria Walk along the beach and cliff tops to Scrabster. Arriving at Thurso is such a key moment on the NCT, as it will be the last town the trail passes through on your way out west-it is worth thinking ahead to what you may need to stock up on in Thurso as there are only small local shops after this point.

Although passing through the town, there are some fantastic views to be had over to Hoy, Scrabster and back towards Dunnet Head. If time allows, it is worth stopping in Thurso itself to soak up some local heritage (such as at the North Coast Visitor Centre) or grabbing lunch (or cake!) locally.
